Kawerau Power Station

Construction of Mighty River Power’s 90MW Kawerau geothermal power station commenced in January 2007.  Octa’s role was to provide professional review of Project Management Plan, Capital Works and Risk Management policies for the Mighty River Power Company.

The new geothermal power station significantly increases generation capacity in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, meeting approximately one-third of residential and industrial demand in the region.  It also provides electricity cost certainty to important local industry such as the Norske Skog Tasman Plant.

Octa provided an external overview of the project development to MRP’s Project Steering Committee with the project due for commissioning in June 2008.   Octa was also employed to review and assist in revising Mighty River Power’s policy on capital works projects and risk management.  Previously, Octa had been engaged to review and assist in developing site specific Project Management Plans for a number of wind farm projects that could be used as a template for all Mighty River Power major capital projects.
