Octa was contacted by the Southern District Health Board to coordinate the installation of a new MRI Scanner. Health and safety were crucial within this project, due to the assembly being within a live operational hospital. One of the main challenges was that the team installed this adjacent to an existing lecture theatre which required a high level of acoustic treatment to the existing walls and ceilings. We were also directly above the Emergency Department, so all services below the floor had to be carefully coordinated with the ED stakeholder.
The installation of the MRI Scanner was challenging due to significant demand for the MRI Scanner and the project was Fast-tracked. A large crane was required to lift the 4-tonne machine into the radiology department, located on the 1st floor, through a specially cut hatch in the Dunedin Hospital roof. The location of the crane lift required extensive propping to the existing Concourse, allowing the weight of the Crane to access from Great King Street.
