The High School began as co-educational over 100 years ago and by the 50’s had reached capacity, and the boys were moved into new premises. Over the years the Boy’s High School has found its identity, excelling in both sport and academically, and recognised as a culturally integrated community – coming second nationally in the Kapa Haka.
The Marae Whare Ako will provide:
• Improved well-being by:
- Empowering Māori of the wider school community with a “tūrangawaewae”, a place to identify with.
- Empowering all New Zealanders of the school community with the confidence to actively connect, identify with, and participate in Māori cultural contexts as a truly bicultural citizen.
- Providing state-of-the-art marae accommodation facilities that will enhance the ability for large community groups to socially connect in a friendly marae environment.
• Māori students learning as Māori and connecting with Māori families
• Addressing the cultural needs of urban Māori
• A place of belonging for the teaching and learning of Māori focused subjects
• A symbol of validation.
