Octa provided Project Management and Engineer to the Contract roles for the Ancillary Works Project, part of Phase 1B of the Prison Capacity Programme.
The scope of work undertaken, while the prison remains fully operational includes:
• Additional car parking space (68 parks)
• Hardening and reconfiguration to an existing building within HBRP for the new MCR space
• Extension work to Health Care Unit Dispensary
• Re-arrangement of existing holding cells within the Health Care Unit
• Portacom units for staff facilities - Male/Female (WC and Changing Facilities)
• Addition of a roof over a birdcage walkway.
The work was carried out over a 20-month programme including delays due to challenges around meeting all Stakeholder requirements and ensuring the correct scope for both Corrections and HBRP were captured. Design to some of the above areas were revisited during construction, pushing the programme out further than originally planned.
One of the key challenges within this project was understanding how operations affected the design and what hardening would be required and where, to ensure the new spaces were safe for the staff. Although all these areas are bespoke designs, standard design principles were used to meet both Corrections and HBRP’s requirements.
