The new Police Station and Remand Centre is approximately 3,100 square metres in area and houses around 145 staff. It is configured into Two Zones – Zone 1 (north wing) contains Police operations and Zone 2 (south wing) contains the remand wing/police cells, dog handling area and SAR store.
This was a traditional fixed price contract; however, due to the late inclusion of the Remand Centre, was completed on an open book variation basis. The project was tendered and award was imminent when Corrections joined the project as part of the wider Joining Forces programme. The contract was then negotiated with the preferred contractor to include the Remand Centre. This allowed the piling and foundation to continue on site while the detailed design of the modified works was completed and re-consented. Construction (and Design) took 20 months to complete.
