The Bridge 16 project focuses on replacing the timber abutments, piles, and piers on both sides of the bridge, located on the Midland Line between Springfield and the Staircase in Canterbury. Originally constructed around 1900 and strengthened in 1945, the bridge spans Patterson’s Creek. Recent modifications involved replacing timber piers with steel towers, which altered the support conditions for the trusses, necessitating further strengthening of specific components.
The scope of work includes preparing enabling works such as setting up the compound and access, erecting scaffolding, and investigating and measuring existing steel components on-site. The project will also involve replacing piers 1, 2, 8, and 9, conducting abutment works and earthworks at the approaches, and implementing scour protection measures. After construction, the scaffolding will be dismantled, and the site will be restored by dismantling the compound and making necessary repairs.
