As the majority user of the Auckland Domestic Terminal, Air New Zealand engaged Octa to represent them across strategic, operational and safety issues throughout the redevelopment of the Terminal building by Auckland International Airport Limited.
Octa was also engaged to project manage the scope undertaken by Air New Zealand, including refurbishment and relocation of air-bridges, baggage belts and fit-out to five of its tenanted areas.
The domestic terminal was upgraded to increase capacity, including new security facilities and dual boarding provisions for greater aircraft turnaround efficiency.
The project was both complex and time critical. The domestic terminal remained operational 18 hours per day every day of the week and construction of six new gates and lounges was undertaken within that live airport environment.
Detailed phasing considerations were required in order to ensure that a minimum of four jet gates were operational at all times throughout the works.
Safety of customers and aircraft was the key priority. Specific strategies were developed with the contractor and airlines to mitigate risk including considerations on structure, method of on or off-site construction, position of concrete pumps and trucks and timing of the works.
Daily liaison with the airline was critical, ensuring all parties were well informed to enable co-ordination of activities such as material delivery with the airline schedule.
