Nelson Pine Industries (NPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Forestry Group, appointed Octa as Project Manager for the design and construction of their first medium density fibreboard (MDF) plant. This was commissioned on a greenfields site in 1986. Octa also provided project management services for a second MDF line which was commissioned in 1991.
Octa developed a project master programme, detailed budget, conditions of contract for the main plant supply, and negotiated all aspects of the main plant supply. Octa was also responsible for appointment of local design engineers, design co-ordination, PCG (Project Control Group), conditions of construction contracts, regular programme and cost report updates, site management, commissioning co-ordination, and commercial close out of all contracts.
Both stages were commissioned and operational on programme, and within the project budget. The plant generates almost all of its own heat requirements through the burning of wood waste, such as bark, sawdust and offcuts.
