The Southern District Health Board (SDHB) engaged Octa to provide project management services for the latter stage of the two stage ICU upgrade project. This project is a $15M refurbishment of the ICU unit on level 5 of the hospital’s main ward block. In order to maintain a minimum number of High Dependency Unit beds, the project was undertaken in two stages.
Due to the resignation of the SDHB’s project manager, Octa was employed in mid-2019 to provide project management services for the final six months of Stage 2. However, completion of the remaining work proved to be more complicated than envisaged, with a number of issues encountered with the performance of the installed HVAC system.
While the majority of the ICU building works was completed in early 2020, Octa’s engagement was extended to assist the SDHB to investigate and resolve the HVAC performance issues. As well as assisting with Covid-19 related works, Octa’s input included management of the investigation, consequential design and construction works associated with completion of the HVAC remedial works.
This was a major refurbishment project completed within an existing hospital. Therefore, there was a need to carefully plan and stage the work so that there was minimal impact on critical hospital services.
