Central Library Establishment (Turanga)

Octa was involved in the initial phases of the project including Master Programming and Design Management prior to the Central Library project going out to tender. Octa is currently engaged as the Establishment Project Manager supporting the Christchurch City Libraries to ensure the Central Library Project meets stakeholder expectations and the strategic objectives set out in the Project Business Case.

As the flagship of the city’s library network and benchmarked against international central libraries, Turanga will retain the largest print collection while also showcasing Canterbury heritage and taonga.  It was opened officially on 12 October 2018, as planned.

Several project work-streams beyond the traditional fit-out scope were managed concurrently, in conjunction with the base-building’s design and construction activities. They included:

  • Fit-out activity scope: Furniture/Shelving, IT/AV/Technology, Collections, Logistics and Artwork.

  • Service activity scope: Staffing / Recruitment / Training, New and Existing Facilities Operations and Dis-establishment and Public Programmes and Event

In June 2019 Turanga won PCNZ’s Rider Levett Bucknall Supreme Award.

“…Spread over five storeys and 9,500 m2, Tūranga is a visually stunning symbol of hope, unity and rebirth that shapes the way the community and visitors experience Christchurch’s City Centre. Tūranga celebrates diversity and culture, creating a social hub for information, knowledge, innovation and entertainment….”
