Victoria University Rutherford House

A six-floor annexe on the Featherston Street side of the current building provides modern, fit-for-purpose teaching spaces, while extensions to the north and south podium levels provide further office and library space.  Refurbished circulation spaces on the ground and mezzanine floors create a student HUB that will better connect the Business School with the Law School’s current location across the street in ‘Old Government Building’.

Currently the University leases the West Wing of the Railway Station to help accommodate the Victoria Business School. The Rutherford House redevelopment project is due for completion at the end of 2016, allowing the University to exit from the West Wing when its lease expires.

The physical works commenced early 2015 and are due for completion in March 2017. The total floor area over the six floors and including the south-east extension is 4,000 square metres.

Following the departure of VUW internal Project Manager, Octa was engaged to complete the works ensuring budget and programme are not compromised.

Identification of asbestos within the existing tower has resulted in a sub-project to remediate existing floors.  This sub-project has an anticipated budget of $36M and scheduled to be undertaken over the next five years.  Upon completion all that will remain of the existing tower is the concrete structure.

This has resulted in decanting complications and compounded programme risk to the annexe project as the two towers are linked via glazed atrium.
